By a vote of 14 to 12, the Justice and Citizenship Commission approved PL 2,234/2022 on June 19, opening the door for casino regulation in Brazil. After the Senate plenary returned from recess on August 1st, it was anticipated that they would vote on it.
CNN sources, however, suggest that Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco prioritises issues pertaining to state debt and taxes over the gambling measure.

It may be put to a vote the following week if it is not postponed. If the law passes the senate, President Lula da Silva has already stated that he will sign it.
The bill will be discussed at the meeting on Thursday, which will be presided over by Senator Irajá Abreu. The remaining points of dispute will be worked out. These include the possible bolstering of policies to keep organised criminals from interfering and to stop money laundering.
Pressure from evangelical senators, who worry that legalising gambling will increase the number of addicts in Brazil, also played a role in the decision to postpone the vote.
