Portugal's record-breaking online gambling income in Q4 is driven by sports betting.

 Portugal's gross online gambling revenue reached a record €323 million (£271.5 million/$352.2 million) in Q4, primarily due to the country's sports betting market's notable expansion.

 The Q4 total, which covers the three months ending December 31, 2024, is 42% higher than the year before.  Additionally, it is 21.3% greater than the previous record of €266.3 million, which was set in Portugal in the third quarter of 2024.

 Although total revenue reached a record high, data released yesterday, March 18, by the regulatory body Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos (SRIJ), also shows record results in the online casino and sports betting sectors.

 The casino made the most money, but in Q4, sports betting took the stage with year-over-year growth in revenue.

 Examining sports betting in more detail, revenue reached €138.3 million, a 90% increase from the previous year.  Additionally, this easily surpasses the €91.2 million recorded in Q3 by 51.7%.

 Despite player spending staying at the same level, the increase occurs.  In Q4, consumers wagered €533.7 million, up from €532.1 million the year before.  Nonetheless, this was significantly more than the €483.4 million in Q3.

 75% of this was used for football wagers.  Tennis received an additional 10.5% of the wagers, basketball received 10.2%, and other sports received 4.3%.

 Revenue from the online casino came to €184.6 million.  This sets yet another record, surpassing Q3 by 5.5% and surpassing Q4 of 2023 by 19.5%.

 The total amount spent on online casinos throughout the quarter was €5.15 billion, which was 5.6% greater than Q3 and 21.1% more than the same period last year.

 With 80.2% of all bets, online slots once again proven to be the most popular among gamers.  French bank, a dice game, came in second with a 5.4% share, followed by French roulette at 5.3% and blackjack at 4.8%.

 There are more than 4.7 million active gamers in Portugal.
 The SRIJ also released information on player behaviour in addition to financial statistics.  During the fourth quarter, 4.7 million people gambled online, a 15% increase from the previous year.

 There were about 614,800 new registrations over that time, which is 15% more than in 2023.  Although the most common age group for internet gambling is still 25 to 34, the bulk of these were between the ages of 18 and 24.

 In Q4, 16,200 people choose to self-exclude from online gaming.  This indicated that 292,400 Portuguese citizens had self-excluded by the end of the quarter.

 Furthermore, 41 websites that were found to be operating illegally received shutdown letters from the authority.

 The land-based industry has mixed news.
 Gross revenue from land-based gambling increased 12.5% annually to €72.6 million.  However, this is 4.3% less than the total for Q3.

 In Q4, slot machines brought in €53.9 million, a 4.8% increase over the previous year.  The remaining €18.8 million, a 36.9% increase, was divided between bingo and casino-style games.

 In this latter category, American roulette brought in the greatest money, €6.9 million, but every segment of this industry grew annually.
